Meet Oshine the Obese Orangutan

7 Sep

That’s one big ape.  And she’s on a diet.  Judging by that face, she’s not liking it much.

Oshine is her name and she’s the newest addition to the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre across the pond in the jolly ol’ British Isles.  She’s twice the weight of a typical orangutan, probably the result of living the life of a pet in South Africa.  And because of it, plus the fact that they needed a special crate to move her, she’s on a diet of vegetables and fruit.

Pissed!

She’s also going to be forced to exercise too, but the combination of that with the diet should get her down to a normal weight in a few months’ time.  And at that point she can find a sexy single and get started making babies.

Here’s hoping that she’s successful with that.  You get busy, Oshine.

Get busy gettin’ bizzay.

Adorable Monkey Picture Alert! Orangutan and Lion Cubs

2 Sep

The picture pretty much says it all.  The orangutan’s name is Hanama and the lion cubs are Shukuza and Simh.  All are young, spunky, and almost unbearably cute.

From Dailymail:

The ape formed a bond with the boisterous cubs as soon as he met them, according to their keepers at Myrtle Beach Safari, in South Carolina in the United States.

Hanama lies on his back to let the month old lions relax on his stomach and is often caught gazing down affectionately at the cubs before hugging them.

Awwwww.

But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.  In about six months the cubs are going to be a bit too big for Hanama to handle and they will be forced to separate.  At which point they’ll need to find someone else to relax on his stomach and accept his love.

Any volunteers?

And now to our correspondent, the Weather Baboon!

31 Aug

The folks here at Chimps Ahoy are dedicated to bringing you monkey news and updates from all over the world, and weather is certainly no exception. Luckily for you, dear reader, I have just received a communique from our weather correspondent, the Weather Baboon, deep in the Borneo jungle! Take it away, WB!

W.B. here reporting from steamy Borneo, Indonesia!

The 95% humidity has turned over to rain tonight, and the orangutans are not happy! Those without palm leaves to cover their heads have been eying my umbrella jealously! The news just gets worse from there so I’d best not tell them that they have at least another five days of steady rain and thunderstorms ahead lest I lose my bananas to them as well!

The 90 plus degree heat will only add to the orangutan agitation.

Thanks, WB! Is there anything else you want to pass along?

Yes, there is! My immediate family lives in the beautiful wine country of Cape Point and I’d like to get an ook-out to them!

That’s wonderful, WB. By the way, did you know there’s an article on them in the Monkeys In The News section of Chimps Ahoy! about their fondness for, ummm, drinking?

Oh…no….

Can you tell us about the weather in Cape Point?

Beautiful drinking weather! Mix of sun and clouds with highs in the 60′s and lows in the 50′s. Here’s a few pictures of my family:

WB, signing off…

Thanks again, WB! We’ll be sure to check in with you periodically. And don’t worry about that Cape Point baboon that became too much of a drunken nusiance and had to be destroyed. It probably wasn’t anyone in your family.

WHA??
